Customer Challenge: Develop a spray truck with four independent spraying systems and find a chemical-resistant, durable hose and reel to get the job done
Hannay Solution: 1500 and CHC Series Reels
“My customers love Hannay reels. They tell me they love the quality.” —John Motis, President and CEO of Chemical Containers, Inc.
Chemical Containers began in 1983 as a fertilizer injection business, particularly in citrus farming. “Agriculture is very cyclical,” says Chemical Containers President and CEO John Motis. “During the fall and winter, our volume of business would go way down, so I knew we needed to find business in industries other than citrus farm equipment. I had no idea that my business would grow into 145 employees. I only wanted to not go broke.”
Today, Chemical Containers is a leading manufacturer of spray equipment tailored for various industries around the world. A Chemical Containers customer is anyone who stores, pumps, or sprays liquids, from companies with one truck to companies with a fleet of 300 trucks.
Chemical Containers is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to fit any customer, which has helped with expansion into other industries. Its talented team of engineers is often tasked with challenging designs.
“We end up with a lot of dreamers, people with ideas,” says Motis. “Some of the dreamers have ideas that have helped us find our way into an industry. My guys in the shop sometimes tell me I’m crazy, but our willingness to listen to customers and help them is what sets us apart from our competitors.”
The true measure of teamwork is when two companies can come together to solve a problem. A Chemical Containers customer that produces bleach was contracted to clean the pools of a major theme park. This customer needed application methods that were quiet because the bleach was to be delivered at night. The park is full of tight spaces and hard-to-reach pools, so the vehicles used had to be nimble and agile. It was also necessary for the hose and reel to be resilient to caustic bleach and pool-cleaning chemicals. Hannay designed the CHC reel with a CPVC swivel joint that resists corrosion to check all these boxes, and Chemical Containers was able to deliver a solution to the customer.
Many Chemical Containers trucks are equipped with the Hannay 1500 Series power rewind reel. Motis says it has become a staple of the business: “The versatility and quality of the reel and how we can have multiple pumps and multiple reels on one truck make it a great fit.”
