Hannay Reels to the Rescue: 3 Reels for Fire and Emergency Services

Posted on 06/08/2022

Fire and Rescue Reels

Combating fires. Delivering critical medical aid. Assisting in recovery efforts. When lives are on the line, firefighters, first responders and other rescue squads have only a moment’s notice to jump into action. But without reliable equipment at their side, these teams are left at a significant disadvantage, no matter what the obstacle may be. The right reel can take on extreme conditions and still deliver the top performance required on a daily basis. These three reels can make all the difference next time your fire and rescue team gets called to the scene.

4000 Manual/Power Rewind Reel

Hannay’s 4000 Series helps fire crews cut down on excess labor and save lives on mobile skid units while meeting a wide range of requirements. That’s why KIMTEK Corporation chose to equip their compact fire skis units with this solution. Designed for small and medium-sized trucks, these units offer wildland and off-road fire and rescue capabilities. KIMTEK configured these smaller units with the low-profile 4000 Series, which can hold 100 feet of 3/4" or 50 feet of 1" booster hose. Stainless steel versions are often used as well, offering greater protection against the elements.

“After a lot of exposure to both career and volunteer departments, I knew that if there was a good reel out there, it was always a Hannay reel. Literally thousands of phone calls and quotes and orders since, I don’t think myself  or my team has ever, EVER been questioned on the Hannay reel,” said Kimball Johnson, KIMTEK founder and president.

But KIMTEK isn’t the only mobile skid leader in the industry to choose the 4000 Series. RKO Enterprises manufactures utility vehicles for urban and off-road fire and rescue services. The larger versions of these units are equipped with the 4000 Series, which handle up to 200 feet of 3/4" booster hose. RKO opts for the power rewind with a chain and sprocket drive driven by an electric, hydraulic, or compressed air motor.

“Down to the nuts and bolts they design, Hannay is the most dependable reel on the market. Everything about it is top quality, right down to the people I deal with at the company,” said Kieth Olson, owner of RKO Enterprises.

ELF1500 Utility and Breathing Air Hose Reel

Hannay’s ELF1500 can be found out in the field as part of Safe Air Systems breathing air systems. These systems, which are installed on fire trucks and other mobile units, are used to fill self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) worn by first responders for a steady stream of fresh air in areas compromised by smoke or other toxic fumes. Thanks to these high-pressure reels, first responders who use Safe Air’s systems can travel farther and continue the mission at hand that otherwise may have been cut short.

“We’ve never deviated from Hannay. We’ve had multiple other hose reel companies come in and try to pitch us, but there have been no problems with Hannay and they’ve always been really good to work with us if we need a custom application,” said Edward Holland, shop supervisor for Safe Air Systems.

The compact ELF1500 is designed to handle 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" I.D. hose while fitting snugly onto any rescue vehicle. Available at 3000 psi and 6000 psi, the ELF1500 features stainless steel internals to support standard breathing air and high-pressure breathing air applications. The chain and sprocket drive are powered by an electric gear motor, cutting down on valuable hose deployment and rewind time.

In many circumstances, first responders may be required to provide onsite power to lights, pumps, and electric power tools. In those situations, having a compact solution that maintains safety while affording efficient unwind and rewind is critical for rescue companies. Reels like the ECR1600 Series come in handy on fire trucks designed by customers like CustomFIRE. Specializing in high-end custom fire apparatuses, CustomFIRE works to equip fire trucks with all the essential equipment they need within very limited space.

“When you’re dealing with a fire truck, space is at a premium. It’s a priority to find ways to creatively occupy space on the vehicle to maximize the potential for rescue equipment,” said Wayde Kirvida, factory sales representative at CustomFIRE.

To accommodate tight apparatus compartments and varying vehicle dimensions, the ECR1600 features a compact base, options for low-profile needs and various compartment sizes and flexible installation options. Handing live electric cable, the reel comes standard with a 3-conductor, 45-amp collector assembly with #8 gauge wiring. The chain and sprocket drive is powered by an electric motor for increased retraction speed and safety.

Hannay Reels offers a selection of leading fire and rescue reels for water and foam dispersal, breathing air applications, and onsite power. To find the right reel for your team, contact us at 877-467-3357, email reels@hannay.com or visit the links below.
